Glossary

G

G
An industry designation for a 2kV portable power cable consisting of 2 – 4 insulated conductors with ground wires placed in the valleys for use in mines and similar applications.
G-GC
An industry designation for a 2kV portable power cable consisting of 3 insulated conductors with ground wires, 2 ground wires, and a ground check conductor. For use in mines and similar applications.
Gage Element
(measurement) See gage member.
Gage Member
(measurement) Term used to designate the element of a gage which is accurately finished to size and is employed for size control. Example: A go-no-go plug gage consists of a double-ended handle with a “go” gage member on one end, and a “no-go” gage member on the other. Also referred to as gage (or gaging) element.
Gain
(measurement) An increase in signal parameter (ie voltage, current, power). Gain is a ratio frequently expressed in decibels (dB).
Galvanic Corrosion
(process) A process in which the flow of electrons causes preferential corrosion of one metal when in contact with another.
Gauge
A term used to denote the physical size of a wire.
Generator
(electrical) A machine that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy.
GHz
See gigahertz.
Giga
A prefix meaning one billion (109)
Gigabit Ethernet
High speed network data transfer protocol standard (IEEE 802.3z)
Gigahertz (GHz)
One billion cycles per second (109 cps)
G-Force
(measurement) Gravitational acceleration of a freefalling body. Equal to 32.2 ft/sec2.
Government Rubber Synthetic
(GRS) (standard/abbreviation) This is a government standard for Buna-S Rubber for jacketing and insulating compounds for military wires and cables.
Graded Index Fiber
(fiber optic) An optical fiber whose core has a non-uniform index of refraction. The differences in the refractive index reduce signal spreading caused by modal dispersion.
Grid
(general) A two-dimensional network consisting of a set of equally spaced parallel lines superimposed upon another set of equally spaced parallel lines so that the lines of one set are perpendicular to the lines of the other, thereby forming square areas. The intersections of the lines provide the basis for an incremental location system. Also called matrix.
Grid-Spaced
(general) Equally spaced in a rectangular pattern.
Grommet
(connector/accessory) A rubber seal used on the cable side of a multiple-contact connector to seal the connector against moisture, dirt, or air.
Ground
An electrical term meaning to connect to the earth or other large conducting body to serve as an earth, thus making a complete electrical circuit.
Ground Loop Noise
(electrical) Noise that results when different points of a grounding system are at different potentials and thereby create an unintended current path.
Guard Band
(circuit) The unused area which serves to isolate elements in a printed circuit. Examples: area between printed circuit paths; the area between an element and the edge of the mounting base.
Guide Pin and Socket
(connector/accessory) A device which provides alignment between mating connectors during engagement. May also be used to provide polarization and/or keying and to prevent damage to the contacts caused by mis-mating of the connectors.
